This was an excellent piece of cinematography. Youre with both characters the entire way and constantly know whats happening to them. The MPAA has announced that Sam Mendes upcoming World War I movie, 1917, will be rated “R” for “violence, some disturbing images, and language, ” which makes sense since its a war movie. And yet studios have been playing around a little with how much they can get away with in war movies and get a PG-13. Steven Spielberg s World War I movie, War Horse, only had a PG-13 rating, and Christopher Nolan was able to get a PG-13 rating for Dunkirk. The latter proved incredibly successful for Warner Bros. with the film pulling in 189 million domestic, and while you can claim that part of that can be attributed to Nolan being such a draw, an R-rating would have been a barrier. Although theres no reported budget on 1917, the R-rating cements the movie as a prestige awards play for Universal, which is fine. Theres nothing wrong with releasing a serious movie for adults around awards season. While a war picture, especially one made to look like its done in one continuous take, is going to be more expensive than potential competitors like Marriage Story and Parasite, Universal still expects that there will be audience for this kind of film around the end of the year. Thats not a bad bet to make, and although we shouldnt expect it to pull in Dunkirk numbers, theres no reason 1917 cant be a success, especially if it garners awards buzz. 1917 opens December 25th and stars George MacKay, Dean-Charles Champman, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Heres the official synopsis for 1917: At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastics George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers–Blakes own brother among them.

Only the settings of the battlefield looked pretty good, but asking two young men without enough battle experiences instead of ordering two battle-seasoned old guys to infiltrate behind the enemy line, trying to deliver a warning to another British Battle group was just too ridiculous to swallow. What we saw in this movie was nothing but watching two guys trudging through trenches, bombed holes filled with filthy rainwater and corpses, bob llowed with the boring camera for most part of this boring movie. The only tension was when they met a German pilot after his airplane crashed next to them, then. nothing.
Compare to "Dunkirk 2017" this movie really sucks big time, don't know how this boring movie would win the Best Picture of the 77th Golden Globe award.

Day-lit house of horror … Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay in 1917 S am Mendess 1917 is an amazingly audacious film; as exciting as a heist movie, disturbing as a sci-fi nightmare. Working with co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, he has created a first world war drama of the Western Front and a terrible journey undertaken by two boys like a ghost train ride into a day-lit house of horror, periodically descending into night and then resurfacing into an alien world, bright with menace. And its filmed in one extraordinary single take by cinematographer Roger Deakins, a continuous fluid travelling shot (with digital edits sneaked in, evidently at those moments where we lose sight of them, or in moments of darkness or explosion – but where exactly, I mostly couldnt tell. Mendes shows us what these soldiers see and sometimes wheels the camera around so we can see them seeing it: a gruelling odyssey whose trench scenes are perhaps intended to recall Kubricks Paths of Glory – and later our stricken hero enunciates a panicky line in the midst of his terrified comrades that reminded me of something similar from Apocalypse Now: “Wheres your commanding officer? ” (The single-take horror also reminded me of the TV director in that film, frantically telling the numbed grunts not to look at the camera. I wonder if this might have inspired Mendes? The situation is that Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) are lance corporals – and messengers. These men, like the rest of their company, have been lulled into a false sense of security by what appears to have been a German retreat, and an imminent “big push” from the Allied forces to clinch victory. But the gruff General (Colin Firth) tells them that aerial photo reconnaissance has disclosed that so far from having retreated, the Germans have simply withdrawn to a position where they are better defended, luring their enemy onward into a trap. Now another British division is about to advance into certain slaughter. Field telephone communication having been cut off, the only way to tell them to call off their attack is via messenger. And so these two shivering soldiers have to make their way across no mans land, across the abandoned German lines, through (supposedly) vacated German territory and as far as the advancing Allied troops. Blake and Schofield travel through a postapocalyptic landscape, a bad dream of broken tree stumps, mud lakes left by shell craters, dead bodies, rats. And then when they stumble into the German trenches, they discover how much better built they are, and how much better quipped, trained and led the Germans are – and how much they are more likely to win. But they must carry on, and Mendes and Deakins convey, along with these mens sense of futility and fear, the strange nausea and exhilaration that Blake and Schofield feel, the nihilist elation that comes with the moment-by-moment experience of survival, fiercely holding on to life with every eardrum-splitting sniper shot. But ahead of them lies chaos and loss. The most extraordinary sequence comes when a German airman crash lands almost on top of Blake and Schofield and there is a moment of simple human compassion when the German staggers out of his blazing craft, dying and begging for water. Schofield runs to get him some from a rusty pump and behind his back – behind the audiences backs – the storys most fateful event occurs, off camera. Its a staggeringly bold bit of storytelling, and it comes off. Benedict Cumberbatch in 1917 The single-take technique fascinatingly creates a kind of theatrical effect: the spectacle of two people moving through an unbroken space. It is immersive, yes, but that overused word does not quite convey the paradoxical alienation that is being created: the distance, the pure strangeness. The two mens experiences are bizarre and shocking, but a poignant and then tragic sympathy is finally dredged up from the mud of their ordeal. 1917 is Mendess most purely ambitious and passionate picture since his misunderstood and underappreciated Jarhead of 2005. Its bold, thrilling film-making. • 1917 is released in the US on 25 December, in Australia on 7 January 2020 and in the UK on 10 January 2020.
